He stated that there are multiple distinct musical languages within the series, each representing different groups such as the Harfoots, Orcs, and Elves. With such diversity, there is a risk of creating a chaotic and disjointed musical experience. However, McCreary’s role is to unify these diverse elements through his own artistic vision.
McCreary explained that his instincts, tastes, and melodies are what bring cohesion to the score. He believes that ultimately, it is the melodies that matter the most, as they can be played with a single finger on the piano, yet each one remains unique and distinct.
This approach to the musical score reflects the complexity and richness of the series itself. By employing different musical languages and unifying them through a central voice, the score enhances the viewers’ understanding of the show’s intricate world and its diverse characters.
He asserted, “There are four or five complete music languages that are like their own show in and of themselves, for instance, the Harfoots sound completely different from the Orcs, from the Elves, and so on. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it could be a complete mess. But it’s my voice that unifies all that—my instincts, my tastes, my melodies. At the end of the day, it all boils down to melodies that you can play with one finger on the piano, and that they’re all distinct.”
