India reached the knockout stages after finishing second in Group A behind Kuwait on goal difference after an ill-tempered final group game that ended 1-1 with coach Igor Stimac and striker Rahim Ali seeing red cards.

This also means the duo won’t play any role in the semifinal while coach Stimac is unlikely to be on the touchline for the final as well if India beat Lebanon in the semis. The absence of both of them weakens India for the match as Sunil Chhetri is the sole striker in the squad for the game now with Ishan Pandita ruled out of the tournament earlier.
Speaking of Stimac, Sunil Chhetri already said after the Kuwait game last Tuesday that absence of Stimac as leader does affect their performance on the ground for the energy the coach brings from the touchline. Assistant coach Mahesh Gawli will be officiating the match in the Croat’s absence as he did in the match against Nepal, which India won 2-0.
The 1-1 draw in the last game also ended India’s eight-match clean-sheet streak but they are also on a 13-match unbeaten streak at home and will look continue with that run. India played Lebanon twice this month and ended in a stalemate followed by 2-0 win in the final of the Intercontinental Cup in Bhubaneswar.
World No. 102 Lebanon, who lost three places in the latest FIFA Ranking spread following their results in Bhubaneswar, are a better side in comparison to Intercontinental with full squad available for the game while players are also comfortable to Indian conditions.
Skipper Hassan Maatouk has starred in back-to-back two games with match-winning goals while Mohammad Sadek, Khalil Bader and Ali Al Haj have been important components in attack. The form of their number 9 Karim Darwich has been a concern as he is yet to score since coming to India while back-up striker Ali Mirkabawi is yet to make a positive impact as well.
