In a shocking decision, ESPN released 16-year broadcast veteran and former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy. But his spot on ESPN’s top NBA broadcast team has to be filled by someone.
According to a joint report from New York Post reporters Andrew Marchand and Ryan Glasspiegel, ESPN plans to replace Van Gundy and will likely do so via an internal move. The top three candidates that were deemed “most likely” are JJ Redick, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson.
“ESPN is expected to replace Van Gundy on its No. 1 team. Internally, JJ Redick, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson are the most likely candidates,” the two wrote.
Redick and Jefferson are both NBA veterans who have been serving as analysts for the network for years now.
Burke has been covering the NBA for decades and has experience doing play-by-play calling.

ESPN hired Jeff Van Gundy in 2007 following his dismissal as head coach of the Houston Rockets.
Through the years, Van Gundy was considered one of the top commentators on NBA games, with his partnership with Mark Jackson and Mike Breen turning the trio into one of the very best in the entire sport.
Van Gundy went 430-318 as an NBA head coach, leading the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1999.
