Coco Lee, Singer and Star of Disney’s Mulan, Dies at 48

Sad news has come in as it’s been revealed that Coco Lee has passed away. A successful singer-songwriter who voiced the titular heroine in the Mandarin dub of Disney’s animated movie Mulan, Lee ultimately lost her battle with depression on July 5. According to a Facebook post by her sister, Nancy Si Lin Lee, Lee was rushed to the hospital after a suicide attempt on July 2. While medical professionals spent the next three days trying to save her life, Lee was pronounced dead on Wednesday. She was 48 years old.

“With great sadness, we are here break the most devastating news: CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months,” a statement written by Lee’s sisters reads in part. “Although, CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her.”

The statement also notes how this year marks the 30th anniversary of Lee’s singing career, having found great success with her international acclaim and “excellent live performances.” Lee’s family also credits her with working tirelessly to “open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese,” reflecting on how proud they are for the accomplishment.

“As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister,” the statement continues. “We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel. We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression; we trust God has her best interest looked after! Now, our greatest responsibility is to take good care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone will pray for this poor old lady & allow us time & privacy in healing.”

The family adds, “Finally, we would like to thank the medical staff again for their dedication to care throughout the whole process. At the same time, we hope that everyone will not only miss CoCo, but also share her bright smile, treat people with sincerity, and convey kindness and love to everyone around us, and continue CoCo’s wish to let everyone around feel her love and happiness. Although CoCo stays in the world for not long a time, her rays of light will last forever!”

Born in Hong Kong in 1975, Lee relocated to San Francisco with her family when she was nine years old. Years later, Lee would find success with pop music in Hong Kong, rising to fame back in Asia. After dominating the Mandarin and Cantonese pop charts, Lee would further lend her talents to American productions, conributing to the soundtracks of different movie releases. This includes performing the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon theme song “A Love Before Time.” In 2001, Lee would perform the song live at the Academy Awards.

Lee was also notably hired by Disney to sing the song “Reflection” for the animated film Mulan. The House of Mouse was so impressed with her work that she was also asked to voice Mulan in the Mandarin dub of the film.

Our thoughts are with Lee’s family at this time. Rest in peace, Coco Lee.
