England have recalled James Anderson for the must-win fourth Ashes Test against Australia at Old Trafford.

Anderson, 40, was left out of England’s three-wicket win at Headingley after only taking three wickets in the first two Tests of the series.

England’s record wicket-taker comes in for Ollie Robinson, who struggled with a back problem in Leeds and was unable to bowl in the second innings.

Moeen Ali is carded to bat at three, having been promoted in England’s second innings at Headingley. Harry Brook batted at first drop in the first innings but scored a match-winning 75 at No. 5 on day four.

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood retain their places in the side after impressing in Leeds, with Woakes taking six wickets and scoring a crucial 32 not out as England chased 251 to keep the series alive.

Wood, meanwhile, took figures of 5-34 on day one as Australia collapsed from 240-4 to 263 all out.

The Durham star, who reached speeds of 96mph, took two more wickets in the second innings while scoring 40 runs from 16 balls across the match.

Ben Stokes’ side kept the series alive with a thrilling run-chase following two narrow defeats at Edgbaston and Lord’s.

Victory for England in Manchester would send the series to an Ashes decider at The Oval, while an Australia win or a draw would see the tourists retain the urn.

Speaking ahead of the fourth Ashes Test – played at his home ground – Anderson said he would have ‘no complaints’ if he was not selected.

‘This is an Ashes series and there is absolutely no chance nostalgia will come into selection for the next Test,’ the veteran told the Daily Telegraph.

‘Letting Jimmy Anderson bowl at the Jimmy Anderson End because it is a nice story will not be a thought in the heads of Ben Stokes or Brendon McCullum.

‘They will pick the strongest team to compete with Australia that particular week. I am completely happy with whatever they decide.

‘I know I am not guaranteed to play the next Test and I will completely understand if they want to stick with the winning team. The selection side is out of my hands. I just make sure that I am in a good place and ready to play.’
