Washing machine seals are prone to collecting dirt, debris, mould, soap scum and bacteria. Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their solution for removing mould from washing machine seals.
The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.7 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.
Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.
On one such group, Facebook user Susie Milner said: “Can someone please recommend a way to remove this from the rubber around the door of my washing machine? Thanks in advance.”
The seal was covered in black mould and grime and soap scum. The post was inundated with responses from Mrs Hinch fans but the most suggested solution was to use Astonish Mould and Mildew spray.
Elaine Sharp said: “Try bleach or Astonish mould and mildew spray.” Lauren Lavinia McGarrity commented: “Mould and mildew Astonish and a Scrub Daddy.”
Michelle Arnold replied: “Wet paper towel very well with Astonish Mould and Mildew and push onto marked areas and spray again. Leave overnight then put on a hot wash. You may need to repeat to entirely clean it.”
Patricia Pickering posted: “Spray with Astonish mould and mildew overnight. You may have to do this more than once.”
Ash Rim agreed and wrote: “It will come off. Astonish mould and mildew soaked on kitchen roll, leave for a few hours and wipe off.” Nora Hamilton suggested the same solution: “Astonish Mould and Mildew is amazing stuff.”
Astonish Mould and Mildew Blaster Spray is available from local supermarkets or online. It’s available from Asda for £1.19 and Iceland for £1.20.
The product claims to be the “UK’s number one mould and mildew remover”. It also claims to “blast away tough stains and effectively removes mould and mildew stains in minutes”.
Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using white vinegar, Pink Stuff cream, bleach, dishwasher tablets and lemons.
Julie Walton suggested: “Spray or apply white vinegar on them. Leave it for an hour or two then give it a good scrub once it’s clean. Leave your door open.”
Mandy Jenkins suggested: “Pink Stuff cream or spray. Leave the door open when not in use unless you have a toddler.”
Pauline Burnett wrote: “Put bleach in all the drawers of the machine. Put on a hot wash after a full wash. Open doors, wipe all around with a cloth.”
Janet Wright Flackett said: “Put two dishwasher tablets in on the highest wash and turn on.”
Debra Readshaw wrote: “Why not try slicing some lemons? Put them around the rim of the door. Leave them for a while then wipe away.”
