Liverpool boss Klopp has Real Madrid and Man City stars on eight-man wishlist

Liverpool have reportedly drawn up an eight-man shortlist as they look to bolster their midfield ranks further. With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson both on the verge of Saudi Pro League exits, the Reds are keen to bring in replacements and integrate the new signings before the 2023/24 campaign kicks off.

Prior to the summer transfer window, Jurgen Klopp made it clear that he needed to reshape his midfield ranks and allowed James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita to all leave as free agents. As a result, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were acquired as replacements in a double signing that appeared to breathe a new lease of life into the squad.

However, with the experienced duo of Fabinho and Henderson both keen on heading to the Middle East, further investment in midfield is required. According to the Daily Mail, there are eight players under consideration at Anfield – though it remains to be seen whether alternative targets emerge depending on the funds recouped from the imminent double exit.

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is the surprise wildcard on the list despite his lack of minutes at the Etihad Stadium last season, with the England international still widely held in high regard. Southampton star Romeo Lavia is also on the shortlist in Merseyside, amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea – however, his £50million price tag is viewed as too high in comparison to more experienced but cheaper alternatives.

Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat is the cheapest option on the shopping list, with the Morocco international available for a mere £30m. Manchester United hold a firm interest in in the playmaker too and are expected to pursue him vigorously once they have signed a striker.

Given that Liverpool are looking to bring down the average age of their squad, players who already have experience under their belt at the top level could prove valuable. Long-term target Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid is still under consideration, as well as Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure, 24.
