Ashes player ratings as 2 England stars struggle and Bairstow heroics unrewarded

Rain prevented play from starting on time on the last day of the fourth Ashes cricket test between England and Australia on Sunday. The weather forecast is bleak and it is possible that play will be washed out for the rest of the day.

Only 30 overs were possible on Saturday, with plenty more rain forecast on what could be a frustrating final day at Old Trafford.

Australia are more than happy to settle for a draw that would see them retain their 2-1 lead and the urn, meaning England will be forced to make the most of whatever windows of play are possible.

They have already been frustrated by a 103-run stand between centurion Marnus Labuschagne and Mitch Marsh, but saw their prospects rise when Joe Root had the former caught behind.

There is little margin for error after their 275-run first-innings lead was whittled down to 61 by the tourists, who will resume on 214-5.

Express Sport reporter Gideon Brooks takes a look at how every England player performed during the fourth Test;

England ratings

ZAK CRAWLEY – 9 Rode his luck early but delivered a barnstorming display reviving memories of Kevin Pietersen with 189 in first innnings.

BEN DUCKETT – 4 Felled by a new ball cracker from Mitchell Starc early in England’s reply a ball, once again, he might have left.

MOEEN ALI – 7 Helped team out again at three and produced a disciplined half century here, adding 121 with Crawley. Still a few too many loose balls.

JOE ROOT – 8 His fabulous 84 in 95 balls rather overshadowed by Crawley’s numbers but 206-run partnership took game away from Australia.

HARRY BROOK – 7 Drawn into mistimed hook by Hazlewood but not before he had added 61 to pile on misery in first inings

BEN STOKES – 6 Another contribution with bat (51) before stumps splattered by Cummins. Hindsight suggests earlier declaration might have been helpful.

JONNY BAIRSTOW – 9 Phenomenal catch to dismiss Mitch Marsh and another good one to get Marnus Labuschagne off Root. Rollicking display with bat.

CHRIS WOAKES – 8 Brilliant 5-62 his fifth Test 5-for but first baller with bat and finished with stiffness in legs. A doubt for Oval.

MARK WOOD – 7 Took prime scalp of Steve Smith but slightly down on speeds at Leeds and denied a crack by bad light late on Saturday.

STUART BROAD – 6 Another whose impact has dipped from earlier in series although removed Usman Khawaja and Travis Head with good deliveries to reach 600 wickets

JAMES ANDERSON – 5 Snagged Aussie captain early on day two, brave with bat in stand with Bairstow but limited impact despite being England’s most economical bowler.
