The incident happened during the final of the three-match ODI series in Mirpur as Harmanpreet Kaur also panned during the post-match presentation ceremony as the sides shared the trophy after the match ended in a tie while the series ended 1-1.
Harmanpreet quoted further controversy when her action during the official post-series photo ceremony saw her Bangladeshi counterpart Nigar Sultana walk out of the session. Her behaviour left the cricket world split with most of her support coming from the Indian fans. Former captain and BCCI official Diana Edulji was in no mood to back the Indian batting star.
Diana Edulji, who played for India between 1976 and 1993, wrote a fiery column for Indian Express as she tore into the Indian captain for setting bad examples for her teammate.
“Harmanpreet isn’t the first cricketer to show dissent and the ICC rightly imposed sanctions on her. I understand wrong decisions were made. We have seen wrong decisions in the past too, not only in women’s cricket but in men’s cricket too,” wrote the 67-year-old retired cricketer.
“However, what happened post-game was not needed, all the more because Harmanpreet is the Indian captain. She has set a bad example for her teammates. I say that because juniors look up to seniors and this, over a period of time, can impact the team culture. This makes Harmanpreet’s behaviour all the more unacceptable.”
Edulji, who played 20 Tests and 34 ODIs, reserved strong words for Harmanpreet Kaur’s behaviour during the photo session as she allegedly gesture to call the umpires to pose with the Bangladesh players while holding the trophy.
“It was deplorable to see Harmanpreet call the umpires to pose with the Bangladesh team, suggesting that they were part of the team and playing for them. I am aware that Harman is hot-tempered, and maybe her ugly conduct was because she wasn’t able to score runs. But she crossed the limit that day as she continued to protest during the presentation ceremony,” said Edulji.
