Los Angeles Zoo is hosting family-friendly ’80s nights

The Los Angeles Zoo is going back to the ’80s as it continues to party into the night this summer with the all-ages Zoo Friday Nights Presented by L.A. Care.

During Zoo Friday Nights, which launched on July 7 and continues through Aug. 18, most of the zoo remains open until 8 p.m. so families can explore what the animals do at night. But the fun continues with live music, dancing, games and food trucks until 9 p.m.

When it comes to the live music, the next events are all about big hair and big fun with a pair of bands performing monster hits from the ’80s. On Friday, July 28, tribute band Flashback Heart Attack will bring all the sing-a-long songs plus their signature ’80s fashion. On Aug. 4, Pop Gun Rerun will take over and rock the crowd and animals at the zoo.

Reggae band Upstream will bring the island vibes on Aug. 11 and the series ends with party rock band Shades of Blue on Aug. 18.

The food truck lineup for Zoo Friday Nights includes Baby’s Badass Burgers, Cousin’s Maine Lobster, Burnt to a Crisp Texas Smokehouse, After’s Ice Cream, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and Jay’z Tacos.

Late night zoo visitors will also get a chance to check out some art with the ongoing “Wildworks: Illuminating Conservation Stories,” which will be illuminated at night. The exhibition, by Denver-based contemporary artist Russell Ronat, is on display through August and features 15 large-scale animal paintings created specifically to be displayed at zoos. Some of the animals depicted in the exhibition include the California condor and peninsular pronghorn, which were created specifically for the L.A. Zoo.
