This ‘Barbie skin health protocol’ was followed by the film’s lead actresses

If you’re a human actress cast to play a life-size Barbie, how do you get your skin to look just like a plastic doll?

One woman who knows at least a part of that answer is London facialist, Jasmina Vico, who was called on by the film’s head of hair and makeup, Ivana Primorac, to get the Barbie girls’ skin looking the best it possibly could for filming.

With 20 years already in the industry looking after skin for actresses including Jodie Comer and Daisy Ridley, as well as productions like Bridgerton and The Crown, Jasmina, knows her way around a skincare routine. And, she’s stuck to her philosophy of approaching skin from the inside as well as the outside with her “gut x skin axis”. For the film, Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, Hari Nef, Emma Mackety, Alexandra Shipp and Mette Towley visited Jasmina’s Fitzrovia clinic weekly for a bespoke skincare Jasmina put together, aptly named the “Barbie Skin-Health Protocol”. The method saw a blend of skin treatments and tech alongside liver-supporting supplements.

So, if you’re wondering what exactly went on behind the beauty scenes: here’s what the plan involved…

Skin treatments

Jasmina called on her Vico Glow Laser treatment to lift and tighten skin. The laser targets the deep connective tissue in skin to activate collagen (which makes skin bouncy and smooth). She also used cold laser and LED light therapy, before giving her clients a pressure point massage to encourage circulation and depuff with lymphatic drainage. During filming breaks, Jasmina would also use microneedling to tackle hyperpigmentation and scarring while boosting collagen and elastin. It also helped boost the absorption of follow-up skincare.

Skin-boosting supplements

Jasmina introduced the cast to an antioxidant-rich milk thistle tea which a) supports liver function and b) became a hit with the Barbies. She had to keep shipping it over from her hometown in Croatia. She also gave the cast her Vico Skin supplements 3, 6 and 9 and recommended that they up their intake of vitamin C, glutathione, kefir and gut-boosting foods..

At-home skincare

To sooth skin post-treatment and keep it looking its best in between visits, Jasmina gave the cast members a preview of her Vico Skin post-procedure serum, which launches this autumn
