The hosts rode on fifties from Joe Root, Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow to take their second innings total to 389 for nine at stumps on day 3 with veteran pace duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad remaining unbeaten.
Root cracked 91 before being undone by a shooter, Crawley signed off a fine summer with a vibrant 73 and Bairstow clubbed 78 as the tourists chased leather for 80 overs. Mitchell Star claimed four wickets for Australia.
Australia have already retained the urn thanks to their 2-1 lead but face a mountainous battle if they are to land a first outright win on these shores in 22 years. Pat Cummins’ side are already 377 behind on a ground where the highest successful chase is 263.
Before they think of a chase, the visitors need to take the final wicket of the hosts. However, England will also have an eye on weather, which robbed them of a possible win in the fourth Test in Manchester last week.
