When it comes to all-time basketball greats, they don’t get much more legendary than Julius “Dr. J” Erving. So when he speaks, the NBA world listens.
But during a recent interview with Joy De’Angela, Erving made a number of headlines with some of his comments. Including a pretty big omission from his list of the 10 greatest players to ever play the game.
According to the Hall of Fame forward, a player like LeBron James can’t be on the list because “he’s got to finish his career.”
Dr. J’s Top 10 All Time list is gonna rub ALOT of people the wrong way. ????????????

Instead Erving’s list consists of five guys he says are “untouchable” in: Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. Saying, “That’s my all-time best team. Everybody else gotta be on the second-team or the third-team.”
His next group of players consists of: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone and Nate “Tiny” Archibald.
Outside of LeBron, Dr. J’s list also leaves out pretty popular picks such as the late Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan and Warriors superstar Steph Curry. Clearly, Erving views the game through a different lens after coming up in the era that he did.
All of the players he named are incredibly accomplished and all reside alongside him in the Naismith Hall of Fame. But what do you make of The Doctor’s top 10?
