Australian icon McGrath calls for Ashes probe after England’s epic Test win

“That should not happen. But, ultimately, the wait for a first Ashes series win in the UK since 2001 goes on another four years.”

Having trailed 2-0 in the series early on, it looked as if England were heading for the prospect of a whitewash as Australia dominated the first two Tests. But after a huge innings from Ben Stokes with the bat ended any chance of that eventuality, England were revived before the weather hit the final two Tests and caused the fourth to be rained off.

England still had to chance to deny Australia the overall victory, even if they retained the Ashes. And it was Stuart Broad, who announced his retirement during the Ashes series, that took the final two wickets to prevent Australia from ending their long wait for an Ashes triumph on these shores.

He ends his superb international career with 604 wickets from 167 matches after his late heroics at the Oval. But for England, the issue may be far from over if the calls for an investigation gather pace.
