Half-Palestinian supermodel Gigi Hadid and her wealthy Los Angeles family have become a focus of anger over Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel and its brutal murder and kidnapping of civilians, especially after Hadid went on social media over the weekend to criticize Israel for “its treatment of Palestinians.”
TMZ reported that every member of the Hadid household has received death threats over their support for Palestine. That includes Gigi, her younger supermodel sister Bella, their brother Anwar and their parents, real estate developer Mohamed, who is Palestinian, and their mother, “Real Housewives of Beverly Hill” star Yolanda.
The threats are being made via email, social media and family members’ cell phones, and they contain graphic descriptions about how someone would carry out their executions, TMZ reported. The family members’ phone numbers also were leaked online, TMZ said.
The threats come after Gigi Hadid provoked a sharp rebuke from the government of Israel on Sunday, after she posted a meme on Instagram Story addressing the Israel-Hamas war, TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter explained.
In Hadid’s original post, the meme read: “There is nothing Jewish about the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians. Condemning the Israeli government is not antisemitic and supporting Palestinians is not supporting Hamas.”
Using its official Instagram account, Israel’s government responded by replicating Hadid’s meme, but replacing its statement with one of its own, which said: “There is nothing valiant about Hamas’ massacre of Israelis. Condemning Hamas for what it is (ISIS) is not anti-Palestine and supporting Israelis in their fight against barbaric terrorists is the right thing to do.”
Israel continued to hit at the supermodel by sharing another post, which said: “Have you been sleeping this past week? Or are you just fine turning a blind eye to Jewish babies being butchered in their homes? Your silence has been very clear about where you stand. We see you.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the post also included an apparent image of a bloodied children’s room with toys on the floor, writing, “If you don’t condemn this, your words mean nothing.”
Since Hamas terrorists launched their surprise attack on Israeli kibbutzes and a music festival across the border from Gaza, normally outspoken celebrities have struggled with how to respond.
Some, including Israeli-born Gal Gadot and Natalie Portman, as well as Madonna, Justin Bieber and Jamie Lee Curtis, have stated unequivocally that they “stand with Israel.” Others, such as Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, have tried to take a more measured approach to the war, by expressing concern for the “innocent” Israelis and Palestinians on both sides, especially the children, who are losing their homes, families and even their lives.
The brutality of the Hamas attacks has put celebrities who previously voiced support for Palestine in a tough position. Many have remained silent, including Gigi Hadid’s sister, Bella Hadid. Gigi Hadid is the only member of her family to thus far speak out.
In an earlier post from Oct. 10, Gigi Hadid in fact condemned Hamas’ attacks on “innocent people” in a lengthy message. She wrote that she has “deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation.”
But she also said, “I also feel a responsibility to my Jewish friends to make it clear: While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person.”
“The terrorizing of innocent people is not in alignment with & does not do any good for the ‘Free Palestine’ movement,” Hadid continued. “The idea that it does has fueled a painful, decades-long cycle of back & forth retaliation, which no innocent civilian, Palestinian or Israeli, deserves to be a casualty of, and helps perpetuate the false idea that being pro-Palestine = antisemitic.”
