In August, iconic West LA restaurant Gladstones had announced its closure, with its last meal scheduled to be served in October. Not so fast: the iconic Los Angeles restaurant will instead reopen under new management for at least two more years before it gets replaced by a Wolfgang Puck and Frank Gehry collaboration.
“Gladstones Legacy to continue operating Gladstones and carry on the tradition for the benefit of the community,” the owners said in a written statement posted to the restaurant’s Instagram on Oct. 15. “Get ready for launch as we celebrate our golden era.”
Fans of the noted restaurant replied to the announcement with glee. “I have been trying to get up there before you guys close and couldn’t be happier to see this,” said one person, with another chiming in to exclaim, “This may be the best news I’ve read in months.”
Gladstones, which sits on a three-acre Pacific Palisades site owned by Los Angeles County, had made plans with famed restaurateur Puck and architect Frank Gehry to reconceptualize the restaurant with an extensive renovation. While that plan remains underway, for now, the restaurant has decided to open for at least two years under a newly formed ownership group consisting of Gladstones staff.
“Whereas the restaurant was previously under the ownership of Sea View Restaurants LLC, it is now owned by Gladstone’s Legacy which is composed of (general manager Jim Harris), the assistant manager, the chef and the parking lot manager,” according to Santa Monica Mirror.
The new owners will reportedly bring a handful of new dishes to the menu, keep some favorites and introduce a “Golden Hour” happy hour with drink specials and a live DJ.
Originally opened in 1972 in Santa Monica Canyon, Gladstones moved to Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in 1981. Since moving to its more scenic location, where it overlooks Will Rogers State Beach, the seafood-forward eatery has attracted a loyal following
