New Zealand parents are a consistent lot, opting again for Oliver and Charlotte as their preferred baby names in 2021.
Oliver has reigned supreme as the top choice for baby boys since 2013, and was number one again last year, when 308 Kiwis opted for the name.
In recent years, New Zealanders have shown remarkable consistency in their habits: over the past four years, four boys’ names and four girls’ names have been the top choices for Kiwi parents.
Since 2018, Oliver, Noah (265 babies named this last year), Jack (235) and Leo (234) have been most popular.
For girls, Charlotte, Isla, Olivia and Amelia have topped the charts, with Charlotte (227) returning to top spot last year.
The most popular Maori baby names were Nikau (96) and Mia (164).
Birth rates are trending down, with 61,018 births registered in 2019, 58,676 in 2020 and 56,013 last year.
