35 of the best lip balms for soft, pillowy lips (because not all lip balms are made equally)

Lip balms are any person’s kryptonite, especially this time of the year were is cold and gloomy day and night. The first part of the body most prone to early exposure and to suffer from these low British temperatures, is our lips. So when you wrap up with a big ankle-length puffer, don’t forget to wrap up and protect your lips too, with some lip balm.

Before you play the face mask card and protest that our lips don’t require attention while they’re covered up during every outing, the claustrophobic conditions are actually worse news for our lips – wearing a face mask can dry them out even more than usual.

This is of course an all-year-roud thing. We also know that in order to get the best out of our makeup, we have to care for our skin underneath for the healthiest and most radiant canvas. While lipstick features heavily in our makeup bags, caring for the skin on our lips is often missed during our everyday skincare routine, meaning they can often become dry, chapped and damaged, by the cold, the wind, and the sun.

Unsurprisingly then, we’re all in need of a little extra nourishment. According to leading aesthetic doctor Dr. Tijion Esho, lips are the second most important facial feature – so it’s good to show them some TLC. “First people notice the eyes, then it’s straight to the lips,” he says. “That’s why it’s not only important to take care of your lips, but also feel confident about them.” We’ll remember that for our Zoom calls.

A good lip balm will offer up nourishing emollients like plant oils, glycerin, shea butter, and hydrating hyaluronic to re-plump lips that feel a little prune-like and deflated.

A wave of tinted options from the likes of NARS, The Body Shop, and Charlotte Tilbury’s highly raved Hyaluronic Happikiss are merging lip colour and lip care more effortlessly together. Less sticky than a gloss, but supercharged with more hydration than your average lipstick, they’re a clever hybrid that makes lips feel softer and silkier while offering a hit of pretty, or vivid colour.

Of course, if you opt for a clear multi-purpose balm, they can double up as a salve around sore noses and dry patches as well.

So, whether you’ve reached the final twist of your favourite lip balm, you’re looking for a formula that puts chapped lips to bed or you’re looking for an even more nourishing solution, it’s time to treat your lips to some proper TLC.

Chapped lip tip: If you find your lips are permanently chapped, give them a quick scrub before layering your favourite balm on top. Just a light back and forth with a soft toothbrush will do, to clear the pathway for hydration penetration.
