White is uncertain when McGregor will make his return to UFC action after his broken leg injury but will begin to arrange a fight when he resumes full training

Conor McGregor: Who will he fight next?

UFC president Dana White is uncertain when Conor McGregor will make a return to UFC action as his recovery from a broken leg continues.

The Irish star has been challenged by several opponents after pictures emerged of him returning to light training.

McGregor will be looking to return to winning ways upon his return to action and has just two fights remaining on his current deal with the promotion.

White has conceded that speculating about the Irishman’s return would just be “stupid” but is ready to find his latest test as soon as he makes a full resumption of training.

“I think Conor will be back this summer,” White told ESPN when addressing a question about a trilogy with Nate Diaz. “I don’t know if Conor will be back this summer.

“That’s all going to depend on how Conor’s leg heals and a million other things that could happen between now and summer. So…to speculate is even stupid.

“I just stopped doing that. When Conor McGregor calls me and says, ‘I’m ready to go full bore and start training a hundred percent’, then we start talking about what’s possible for Conor.”

Diaz is one of a number of potential opponents that have emerged for McGregor including featherweight star Max Holloway and lightweight contenders Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson.

A clash with Diaz would be an illustrious trilogy bout with the rivals holding one win apiece.

McGregor has slid down to ninth in the lightweight rankings and is instead likely to try and earn redemption at 155lb after losing three of his last four fights.

The 33-year-old initially demanded a UFC title shot against Oliveira after he successfully defended his crown against Dustin Poirier late last year.

However UFC kingpin White has ruled out any chances of an immediate shot at world glory with Justin Gaethje lined up next for the Brazilian.

McGregor is keen to make the “greatest comeback ever” when he does eventually return to the octagon but will not try and rush ahead of schedule.

However the superstar’s coach John Kavanagh was forced to step in and put his comeback into perspective when he trained just days after his defeat to Poirier.

“The guy has achieved it all. The money, the belts, the accolades. He did all that then had a terrible injury like this, he told MMA Junkie.

“‘I’m kind of sitting back to look at him and see what his words are but there was never a hint of stepping back, it was right away.

“The following day after the injury he was bench pressing. His leg is hanging off and he’s bench pressing, because he could do that.

“That’s Conor’s approach, it’s ‘ok what can I do’. I certainly got from his words and his actions that he wants to compete again. It’s not about the money.”
