Having been on the British throne for 69 years, Queen Elizabeth II is the world’s longest-reigning monarch. In a thoroughly divided nation, the Queen is oft-considered one of the last remaining figures of unity; no matter how our political stances may vary, we all share an enormous level of respect for the head of state.
Speaking about the Queen, Prince William the Duke of Cambridge, said, “I think I speak for my generation when I say that the example and continuity provided by The Queen is not only very rare among leaders but a great source of pride and reassurance.”
Having ruled for almost 70 years, the mother-of-four has led an extraordinary life: having worked as a mechanic and military truck driver during World War II; working with over 600 charities, military associations, professional bodies and public service organisations; and welcoming eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She married Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947 – five years before she would become Queen. Prince Philip sadly passed away on 9 April 2021, aged 99. She described him as her “strength and stay” during her reign.
The Queen is so intrinsic to the UK’s national identity, it’s hugely difficult to imagine how life will change when she does pass away. Although it’s a reality that no one is looking forward to, it’s also totally understandable to be interested in what happens next following that eventuality.
Here’s everything you need to know about what will happen when the Queen passes:
What is Project London Bridge?
Project London Bridge refers to the UK government’s codename for what will happen in the days after Queen Elizabeth II dies. Documents obtained by Politico have mapped out exactly what will happen in the ten days between the Queen’s death and her state funeral.
