There was no way Will Forte wasn’t going to bring along MacGruber upon his return to Saturday Night Live. On Saturday night’s episode of the long-running sketch comedy series, former cast member Forte made his hosting debut. It was his first time hosting the series, though fans were quite familiar with the actor based on his run that lasted from 2002-2010.

On SNL, Forte would often star in MacGruber sketches. These would spawn a feature film followed by a recent series adaptation released to Peacock. Hosting the new SNL episode, Forte also brought back MacGruber to star in a three sketches that aired throughout the program. They tied together, following MacGruber as he goes down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole, and you can see how it turns out by watching the sketches back-to-back in the video below.

In the sketches, MacGruber is faced with defusing a bomb with just seconds remaining on the timer. Alongside him are MacGruber co-stars Kristen Wiig (Vicki St. Elmo) and Ryan Phillipe (Dixon Piper). As can be expected from the character, things don’t exactly turn out very well.

This story takes MacGruber and puts him into a world of conspiracy theories related to the pandemic. He does this by taking his research to the internet where he learns about QAnon and their associated views on things like Covid vaccinations, Ivermectin, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, cancel culture, and more.

It was fun to see MacGruber back on Saturday Night Live, but what of the character’s future? After one season on NBCUniversal’s Peacock, the fate of the MacGruber series is still in the air. It has not been given a renewal for the streamer at this time, though it hasn’t been outright canceled yet either. Reportedly, the series did pretty well and has a pretty good shot at landing the renewal. During his opening monologue, Will Forte used some humor to address the situation.

“I would like to officially announce that MacGruber has been picked up for a Season 2,” he said. “I would like to announce that. But it hasn’t been picked up yet, so I can’t. We’re waiting to hear.”

MacGruber premiered on Peacock in December. The eight-episode series picks up with MacGruber (Forte) getting released from prison to embark on a new mission of taking down a mysterious villain from his past, Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth (Billy Zane). The series also stars Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe, Sam Elliott, and Laurence Fishburne.

You can watch more episodes of Saturday Night Live as well as the first season of MacGruber on Peacock. The next episode of SNL will air live on the evening of Jan. 29 and will feature Willem Dafoe as the host amid the actor still garnering lots of praise for his role as Green Goblin in the new film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Katy Perry will also appear on the program as the official musical guest.
