The versatile 22-year-old was on the Gunners’ shortlist of potential full-backs in the summer, though the north London club ultimately decided to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna instead.
Since then, the Japanese defender has delivered a string of fine displays to justify the decision and other areas of the squad have become of more pressing concern to Mikel Arteta.
Chief among them is midfield, with Arteta conceding that his side had become ‘very short’ in the middle of the pitch after loaning out Ainsley Maitland-Niles and the club have been exploring a host of different options.
Juventus’ Arthur Melo has emerged as their primary target, though a deal has been complicated by the Old Lady demanding an 18-month loan – not six months – while Massimiliano Allegri is extremely reluctant to weaken his squad this month.
Now The Athletic are reporting that Arsenal are considering a move for Adams instead, a player they scouted and were impressed by over the summer.
Back then, Arsenal saw the American as a defender but now believe his future lies in midfield and feel he could provide some characteristics that have been missing this season.
Adams has a level of athleticism and mobility that no other current Arsenal central midfielder possesses, while the majority of his appearances this season for Leipzig have come in midfield.
Another big bonus is that he can still provide cover at right-back, something Arsenal will be in need of if they decide to sell Cedric Soares this month.
Adams is believed to have a release clause of £32.5million in his Leipzig contract, though the Gunners might hope to try and negotiate a lower fee with the German club – though that could be difficult in the January window.
Two other options also being considered are Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, though both Brazilians are likely to command massive fees.
