What If…? Season 1, Episode 8 Recap: Ultron Gets The Infinity Stones

What If…? season 1, episode 8 flips the script on Avengers: Age of Ultron. In this episode, Ultron manages to get his hands on Vision and the Mind Stone to wreak havoc on the universe. The new episode is much more intense compared to the previous ones and it forces the Watcher to be a significant part of the story.

What If…? season 1, episode 8 cast features Jeffrey Wright, Ross Marquand, Lake Bell, Jeremy Renner, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews, with AC Bradley as the head writer.

What If…? Season 1, Episode 8 Recap

The brand-new episode of What If…? begins with an action sequence where Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton are fighting off Ultron sentry drones in Russia. After Tony Stark creates Vision, Ultron acquires him and kills rest of the Avengers. Ultron plans to destroy the planet by launching nukes, but Nat and Clint are trying to stop him. Unfortunately, they are unable to make it in time to stop Ultron and he launches the nukes that destroy many parts of Earth. Nat and Clint somehow manage to survive.

Thanos pays a visit to Ultron to obtain the Mind Stone. However, the Mad Titan is no match for Ultron’s power and he splits Thanos in half. After killing Thanos, Ultron gets all the Infinity Stones and he realizes that there are many other planets in the universe. Ultron destroys all planets in the one by one and reaches a higher plane of consciousness after attaining eternal peace. The higher plane of consciousness allows Ultron to sense the Watcher’s presence as well as the multiverse. The Watcher finds this surprising as he could be forced to intervene to protect the multiverse.

Back on Earth, Nat and Clint are searching through KGB files for the location of Armin Zola’s artificial brain in Russia. They meet Zola in Siberia and manage to upload the artificial brain in one of Ultron’s sentries to disable the hive mind. However, Zola is unable to do so as Ultron is off-world. Unlike Endgame, Clint sacrifices himself to save Nat and Zola from the Ultron sentries.

Meanwhile, Ultron and the Watcher are in a massive battle that spans across the multiverse. Ultron almost defeats the Watcher, but the Watcher somehow escapes and makes his way to Doctor Strange Supreme’s collapsed universe from episode 4. The Watcher breaks his oath and asks Doctor Strange Supreme for help in defeating Ultron.

What If…? season 1, episode 8 makes it obvious that story threads and characters across different episodes are coming together for an epic finale. It’s refreshing to finally see the Watcher get more involved in the story in a high-stakes battle to save the multiverse. Fans can expect to see other characters from the What If…? multiverse to defeat Ultron.
