Dunfermline Athletic have announced the departure of their manager John Hughes.

The East End Park side were recently relegated to League One after losing a play off match with Queen’s Park at the start of the month.

Former Celtic and Hibernian defender Hughes was appointed to the role in November but was unable to halt their fall from the Championship as they finished second bottom despite a turn in form at the start of the year.

The 57-year-old’s last game in charge was the 1-0 home defeat to the Glasgow side the sealed their League One fate.

The Dunfermline board thanked Hughes, who has managed a host of sides including Hibernian, Ross County and Livingston, for his work there.

A statement released on Thursday said: “John joined our club in late 2021, in very difficult circumstances and the DAFC Board would like to thank him for his hard work and endeavours over the last few months and wish him and his family every success in the future.”

Hughes won the Scottish Cup with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2016 and took Falkirk to a final in 2009.
