Kitchens and campers pair well with Multimatic DSSV dampers and a V8 engine

Trucks and camping go together like bacon and eggs, so it’s only natural the crew at Overlanding Expo selected the new Sierra 1500 AT4X as a base for its latest build. Shod from the factory with Multimatic DSSV dampers and a 6.2L V8 engine, this truck has been fitted with the type of gear of which Sir Walter Raleigh could only dream.
Builders quickly binned the stock pickup truck box, replacing it with a 6.4-foot tray and three-foot canopy from MITS Alloy North America. The tray features an 36-litre water tank, multiple storage places along its flanks, and a full length drawer which extends from the rear. The canopy contains a kitchen and shower, while behind that is a two-person ground tent.

That latter detail is about the only thing your author would change about the build, having been on overlanding expeditions and discovering the joys of rooftop tenting. A cell phone booster, awning, and traction boards are some of the other items one will find on this kitted-out GMC.
Speaking of traction, the crew has fitted 33-inch Firestone Destination mud terrain tires on ICON wheels. Air springs on the rear axle help with all this extra weight. A quintet of amber lights on the roof shine the way forward or illuminate your campsite during late night shenanigans. The interior and hand-of-god 6.2L V8 engine seem essentially stock, though there is a Magnaflow catback exhaust installed for extra rumble.

For those unfamiliar, overlanding is a form of self-reliant camping in which the journey is as important as the destination itself. Most builds start with a stout 4×4, adding the likes of a rooftop tent and cooking facilities in addition to beefing up the vehicle’s off-road chops. Jeeps and Bronco SUVs are popular for obvious reasons but a pickup truck has the added advantage of a wide-open bed area in which store mountains of kit.
Overland Expo is a perpetually growing trade show which features builds such as this GMC and a wide variety of aftermarket companies making bank on the explosively trendy overlanding scene. It isn’t uncommon for a customer to drop big bucks on a rig then spend an equivalent amount fitting it with gear.
