Sydney’s cheapest date night sold out

The cheapest wine and cheese night ever to hit the streets of Sydney has sold out in a matter of minutes.

A two-night-only wine bar by supermarket chain ALDI had Sydneysiders drooling over the award-winning wines and cheeses for less than $5.

For just $4.41, a ticket to the Trophy Room included a gin cocktail, a choice of celebrated wines, and a deluxe cheese platter.

The most expensive glass of wine on the menu is a pinot noir from Otago for $2.49, while the priciest cheese is a Spanish manchego for 90c. An absolute bargain in any economy, but particularly appealing in the face of soaring inflation.

An ALDI spokesperson confirmed the tickets for the wine bar sold out almost instantaneously as locals scrambled to secure a spot.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response for the pop-up Trophy Room and our customers were eager to get their hands on tickets, which did sell out in a matter of minutes,” they said.

“To those people unable to get their hands on the coveted tickets, our reassurance to them is that the products are all available for sale from ALDI at exactly the same low prices.”

The cheapest wine bar in the city comes at a time when Australians are increasingly concerned about the cost of living, with recent data revealing more than half of supermarket shoppers are worried about the rising cost of groceries.

The data, collected by PricewaterhouseCoopers, shows that nearly half of consumers cut back on dining out and nearly a quarter reduced their alcohol expenditure.

Jason Bowyer, ALDI Wine Expert and Buying Director, said the Trophy Room was a good reminder that a night out doesn’t need to be expensive.

“The Trophy Room is a first for ALDI Australia, demonstrating that a fine wine and dining experience doesn’t have to dent your wallet,” he said.

“And what’s even better, you can replicate the exact experience at home.”

The Trophy Room will open its doors for four sessions on Friday July 15 and Saturday 16 at 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney.

No doubt many Australians will be hoping the experience will be replicated again across the country.
