MONTEREY — The Monterey Bay Aquarium stepped into a new partnership with a company that has made the world’s first fully-biodegradable sneaker with a portion of the proceeds of each sale going to support the aquarium’s mission.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Blueview, the world’s first biodegradable sneaker,” said Claudia Pineda Tibbs, sustainability program manager for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in an email.

The limited-edition Blueview Pacific sneaker was launched on Thursday and is exclusively available nationwide through the company’s website with 5% of the proceeds from each purchase going to support the Monterey Bay Aquarium and its mission to inspire conservation of the ocean.

Blueview’s sneakers are made with plant-based materials to provide consumers with an environmentally friendly footwear option that the company says will help to protect the planet from pollution. Sizes for the fully biodegradable sneaker run from 5 to 14.5, and are priced at $135 a pair.

“We are honored and excited to be partnering with the Monterey Bay Aquarium on this new colorway,” said Stephen Mayfield, Blueview CEO, in a press release. “We are thrilled to be joining forces with an organization equally as committed to the future of our planet, allowing us to make a larger impact on combating plastic pollution and inspiring the protection of our oceans.”

The partnership between the footwear brand and the nonprofit came about as the Monterey Bay Aquarium seeks to partner with aligned corporations to highlight solution-based products and innovative technologies that address climate change and other sustainability challenges.

“Monterey Bay Aquarium is committed to fighting plastic pollution. We no longer have any single-use plastic packaging in our café, we eliminated all single-use plastic packaging from our store, and we supported precedent-setting policies like SB54 that will significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste,” said Tibbs. “Solving the plastic crisis requires many solutions and we’re excited to partner with a brand that is using innovative manufacturing techniques to keep plastic out of their products from the start.”

Senate Bill 54 was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in June requiring all packaging in California to be recyclable or compostable by 2032, cutting plastic packaging by 25% in 10 years and requiring 65% of all single-use plastic packaging to be recycled in the same timeframe.

Additionally, the legislation shifts the plastic pollution burden from consumers to the plastics industry by raising $5 billion from industry members over 10 years to assist efforts to cut plastic pollution and support disadvantaged communities hurt most by the damaging effects of plastic waste.
