Martin Lewis had an emotional moment during Good Morning Britain after watching a young Prince William and Harry walk behind Princess Diana’s coffin.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge will follow directly behind their father King Charles III as the Queen’s casket will be moved through London this afternoon.
During Wednesday’s edition of the news programme, hosts Martin and Susanna Reid reflected on the heartbreaking yet controversial display of the two brothers walking behind Princess Diana’s coffin at age 12 and 15.
The Money Savings expert lost his mother just before his 12th birthday, following a collision with a lorry while he was out with his sister.
Sympathising with William and Harry, he said: ‘I mentioned this earlier I wasn’t going to say on-air, it resonates very powerfully with me as someone who has lost their mother at the same age as Harry was at the time in a road accident.
‘I find it very difficult to watch, thank goodness I wasn’t forced to walk behind, I didn’t even go.’
Turning to his co-host for support, he continued: ‘It does bring back…. you carry on. We’ll move on.’
While comforting Martin, Susanna added: ‘I know Martin. When events like this come up, which are very triggering of private grief, we totally understand.
Viewers praised the star for opening up about his childhood loss on-air, with one tweeting: ‘Very brave of Martin Lewis to tell his story during such an emotional time.
‘I’m sure his mum would have been so proud of the man he turned out to be,’ another added.
‘Tearing up watching GMB over Martin Lewis talking about his mum. This must be a lot for him right now,’ a third person wrote.
The financial broadcaster, 50, returned to the screen to help the nation amid the cost of living crisis.
Martin was scheduled to start his segment earlier in the week but announced that it was postponed due to Queen Elizabeth II coverage.
He tweeted: ‘Just a very quick note.
‘After a chat with @gmb last week, we both agreed it’d be both more appropriate to move “Martin’s Money Mondays” later this week (& prob next) and give more time to cover the latest cost of living issues as part of the programme.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
