The trilogy fight between Canelo and Gennady Golovkin did not blow fans away in the ring and this was reflected in the pay-per-view sales.
The first two fights between Canelo and Golovkin were as competitive and exciting as it gets in a boxing ring, featuring two fighters in their primes.
On both occasions it was almost too close to call with the initial contest ending in a split decision draw, while the rematch saw the Mexican claim a majority decision victory.
In the trilogy, however, it was clear that age had caught up to Golovkin, as Canelo cruised to an unanimous decision victory.
The pair reportedly received a combined $75 million (£66 million), which means the events promoter and broadcaster, Matchroom Boxing and DAZN, will be struggling to break even following the disappointing pay-per-view sales.
According to American boxing journalist, Dan Rafael, the fight did between 550-575,000 pay-per-view buys in the USA, although this does not take into account global sales.
The fight cost $64.99 for existing DAZN subscribers and $84.99 for those buying the bout as a one off.
This means that the trilogy did far fewer buys than the previous two contests between Canelo and Golovkin, the first of which did 1.3 million sales, while the rematch did 1.1 million, both of which were broadcast on HBO.
This trilogy fight even failed to beat Canelo’s clash with Caleb Plant last year, which did 800,000 buys on Showtime and it only just surpassed the buys from the Mexican’s recent loss to Dmitry Bivol, which did approximately 520,000 in the USA.
