Oleksandr Usyk has confirmed that negotiations with Tyson Fury to stage the first undisputed heavyweight unification clash of the four-belt era are still ongoing. The pair were initially in talks to face each other on December 17 in Saudi Arabia, but Usyk affirmed that he wouldn’t be available until February 2023 – putting a halt to proceedings.
With Fury keen to fight this year, The Gypsy King offered fellow Brit Anthony Joshua a shot at his WBC title on December 3 at the Principality Stadium but has since declared that the fight ‘is off’ after Joshua was unable to sign the final contract by Fury’s self-imposed Monday deadline.
Usyk had initially stated that he would not fight anyone apart from Fury following his second consecutive win over AJ last month and is still keen on the match-up. Speaking to Parimatch, he said: “I don’t know anything about what Tyson Fury is doing or thinking. We’re in negotiations talking about a match and we’re doing our best to make this bout happen.
“Of course, I really want to have this fight next year. But if Tyson Fury is not interested in a match next year, then it’s not possible to fight against him. I’m not interested in fighting any other boxer, so let’s wait.
The Ukrainian has also shown interest in a fight with Deontay Wilder and is expected to be ringside for his October 15 return against Robert Helenius in Brooklyn. Usyk’s manager Egis Klimas states that The Cat will face the winner of this bout next while Fury has claimed that he will box Mahmoud Charr in December.
