Man Utd release Mason Greenwood statement

Manchester United have released a statement following the news that forward Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, ABH and controlling and coercive behaviour. The England international was arrested in January and is now set to appear in court on October 15.

The statement read: “Manchester United notes that criminal charges have been brought against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service. He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process.”

Greenwood was arrested on Saturday morning on suspicion of being in contact with his alleged victim. That evening, Janet Potter, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police. The defendant’s first court appearance will take place on Monday 17 October at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court.”

Man Utd transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning on Solskjaer

Greenwood was arrested in January but bailed on February 2, with the United academy graduate being due to answer his bail on April 30. Though a decision was made to push that back in June. The Red Devils suspended the forward following his arrest, with Nike dropping their sponsorship deal with the star and FIFA 23 ruling that the player would not be included in their video game.

Soon after the arrest, United also removed all Greenwood merchandise from their club shop, though they did fail to remove him from their club website that included the 21-year-old in their squad. Speculation built that the England international, who has made 129 career appearances for his boyhood club, was therefore on course to return to the first team setup, though United quickly released a statement in April to deny those claims.
