A young petrolhead has rescued an abandoned Rolls Royce from a car park and has plans to restore it to its former glory.
Cormac Boylan claims it will be better to spend thousands of pounds on restoring the classic car than on a girlfriend “you no longer love”.
The 22-year-old is already known as “Mr Rolls Royce” among friends after purchasing his first at the age of 20, and now he has added a second to his garage, reports Leicestershire Live.
The classic two-tone brown and gold Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was far from loved and had been left to rot in a car park for several years.
A repairs bill that could top £15,000 now awaits, but Cormac believes that the project is one that is more worthy than a doomed relationship.
The 1973 Silver Shadow has more than 130,000 miles on the clock and was discovered by Cormac in a car park near Scraptoft, Leicestershire, earlier this year.
The car had been left abandoned in the car park for around three years, getting rustier and potentially rotting.
Cormac says he was unable to leave it alone, caving in to his desires, seeking out the owner and purchasing the classic for a sum in the thousands.
A great deal of work on the car is needed though.
While the leather seats are in pristine condition, the wood dashboard is in need of some serious tender loving care, while on a more practical level the car needs a new starter motor as it cannot currently move.
In total, restoration costs could be anywhere between £10,000 and £15,000.
He said: “Anyone who knows me knows I love a Rolls Royce. There’s just something so special and British about them.
“I’ve wanted a Shadow for years and as soon as I saw this, I knew I wanted it. I just fell in love with the car and love the colour.
“It’s a project, there’s no denying that but I think it’ll be a great thing.
“You could either spend thousands restoring this car or spend the same on a girlfriend you no longer love. I know which is the better use of the money.”
That money may look like a frivolous expense during the cost of living crisis, but Cormac believes he is not showing off. He is simply here to “save history”.
He said: “People do it with trains and I’m doing it with cars. I’m saving history. I’m saving this car.
“I don’t know why it was left to sit where it was for all those years, but it’s mine now and I want to bring it back to its former glory.
“I know people will look at the numbers and think ‘he’s getting that paid for him’ but that’s not the case.
“I’ve worked hard to earn the money I have to afford this and my other classics.”
Earlier this year, Cormac bought a 1998 Bentley Arnage.
That car has since been sold on, but the petrolhead, who is also a motoring journalist as well as radio presenter, has his sights set on more purchases.
He said: “The absolute dream car is the Rolls Royce Goodwood Phantom.
“It’s a newer car compared to the Shadow and a decent one of them can set you back £60,000 but they can go for as much as £350,000.
“It’s mad but I think I can get there eventually.”
The Phantom is very much a pipedream though. Focus and funds are now devoted to the classic Shadow. But Cormac believes it will be worth it.
He said: “I know I’ll get the Phantom one day, but I’ve got to focus on the Shadow first.
“I want to get it in working order first and give it a good drive.
“I could fall in love with it even more then.”
