Proposition 28 has taken a commanding lead as votes continue to be counted throughout the state.
Proposition 28, if passed, would direct 1% of state-funds allocated to public schools and community colleges by Prop. 98 be spent on music and art programs. More funding would be given to schools with a higher proportion of low-income students.
Groups backing the measure include teacher’s unions from across the state, as well as Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner, who has reportedly donated more than $4 million in support of the measure. Those supporting the measure say that arts and music programs are often the first to be cut in schools struggling to stay open.
No groups officially opposed the measure.
