Karwa Chauth is here and Mumbaikars are enthusiastically engaged in some fashion experiments to express their love for traditional attires, even if it is momentary. While selecting the right festive wear is primary, it is equally important to pay attention to your hairstyle to ace the festive look in style.
As Mumbai’s humidity can be a mood-killer, there are a number of hairstyles one can try out at home with minimal accessories. These creative styling ideas work well to add the right amount of ethnic-ness to your attire, without compromising on your comfort.
Experts Asha Hariharan, celebrity artist at Enrich Beauty and digital content creators Muskan Rawat and Tanya Balchandani share some go-to hairstyles for Ganesh Chaturthi:
Braided ponytail
Move away from your boring ponytails to experiment with it by braiding it up. Start with tying up a French braid from the corners of your forehead and backward from the crown. Lastly, collect your hair into a ponytail and secure your French braided ponytail with a scrunchie.
Twisted ponytail
Part your hair on one side and twist the hair on both the sides to create one ponytail at the back. Twist the hair further and then secure it with a band. This will give you a twisted ponytail. Add some accessories in the end.
Sleek headband open hairstyle
This hairstyle is easier than brushing your teeth. Begin with applying serum to your hair and detangle your hair with a comb. Remove a preferred hair partition that suits your face. Lastly, wear an elegant headband.
Easy twisties with hair clips
What`s easier than this? You can level up this simple hairstyle by just wearing hair clips. Make a suitable partition and start twisting the front section of your hair from the corners of your forehead. Once done, secure your two twisties with thin hair clips. You can use pearl or crystal hair clips. Use hair spray in intervals to make your twisties last long.
Braided Crown
On the top of your head, weave a braid from one end to another as though you are wearing a braided headband. Either leave the hair open at the back or can do a braid. Add cute gypsies on the crown.
One-sided low bun with bun holder
A chic bun will never disappoint you. This one-sided bun will give you an elegant look in just 5 minutes. It`s a quick hairstyle that only requires a hair bun holder. Start with making a side partition, and use a hair serum to detangle your hair. Collect your hair at the base and twist it into a bun. Lastly, grab a bun holder to secure your one-sided bun. Remove a few hair wisps around the corner to elevate your bun and add an artificial flower.
Hippie half bun
Start off by combing your hair properly and applying a pea size amount of hair serum. Tie a half ponytail and then twist it into a mini top bun. Secure the bun with bobby pins and flick out a few strands of your hair from the front.
Sleek low bun
Part your hair from the centre. Tie a low bun and secure it with a black headband. Take a generous amount of aloe vera gel and use a teasing brush to backcomb and settle the hair. Finish the hair-do with a fresh mogra-gajra.
Messy bandana bows
If you are a fan of the boho ethnic vibe, this hairstyle is for you. Make a low messy ponytail and level it up by tying a bandana. Isn`t that easy? Just tie a lower ponytail and tie it with an elastic hair band. Lastly, tie a bandana into a bow around your ponytail. That`s it! Your ultra-chic, boho, and indo-western hair statement is ready.
Here’s how you can incorporate the following hair accessories to achieve an ethnic look during Ganesh Chaturthi:
1. Scrunchie: One can definitely go for scrunchies, especially those with prints, for their messy top buns. One can use colourful satin scrunchies for ponytails.
2. Elasticated headband: Middle-part your hair and set them properly using a headband to create a minimal yet chic hair-do. Pick a pearl or crystal headband to achieve that sleek and ethnic hairdo.
3. Embellished hair clips/bands: Twist your hair back and use the accessories to secure your hair, which also add an extra edge to your hairstyle. Go for floral clips or outfit matching hair clips to give an extra touch.
4. Embellished bun-holders: The hair accessory options are widened in the market. If your hair length is “too short” for a proper bun, use a bun holder that will end up looking cleaner. You can also go for hair extension- bun holders. It basically is a ‘ready-made hairstyle in a clip’.
5. Bandanas: Use a bandana in between your loose side-braid. If your hair gets oily super quickly, you can definitely opt for printed bandanas to cover the sweat and make it look super cool. One can go for a bohemian bandana/plain satin bandana for an Indo-western look.
6. Gajras: One can never go wrong with floral accessories during festivals. Pick any hairstyle and add some fresh flowers or gajras, which enhance the look, even if you are not wearing something super traditional.
Pro-tips
The city’s weather and the exhaustion from work at home during festivals can ruin a good hair day. Balchandani suggests a hair-wash every alternate day and adding moisturising sprays or serums to keep it fuzz-free during the main days.
Rawat shares a list of her personal hacks for the season:
a. Use a mixture of coconut oil and vitamin e capsule once a week to achieve healthy-looking hair.
b. Get a proper trim before the festive season to get rid of those split-ends.
c. Use a heat protectant before using any hair styling tool
d. Apply dry shampoo for last-minute hairstyles
