Dominick Reyes already got knocked out by Ryan Spann at UFC 281 — and former foe Jon Jones just did more damage
It was already a tough night for Dominick Reyes, eating yet another loss at UFC 281 when he was knocked out by Ryan Spann. But the losses he took on this night weren’t through, as he was then buried on social media by one of his former opponents in Jon Jones.
It only took Spann about 80 seconds to finish Reyes. Spann stumbled Reyes in the opening seconds of the fight before quickly putting him away with a hard jab to the face, followed by a hook that clipped Reyes on the top of the head, sending Reyes down and out.
This marked Reyes’s fourth straight loss, which included losses to current light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka and former champion Jan Blachowicz. The skid, however, all began at UFC 247 in February 2020, when Reyes suffered his first professional MMA loss in a controversial decision to then-light heavyweight champion Jones.
Jon Jones claims Dominick Reyes having issues with mindset stretching back to their controversial decision
It’s pretty clear things haven’t been the same for Reyes since the loss to Jones, and some have speculated if that loss can officially be considered a turning point for the worse in Reyes’s career.
Jones, in fact, claimed on Twitter that Reyes’s feelings that he should have had his arm raised that night affected his mentality as a fighter.
Two judges scored the Jones vs. Reyes fight 48-47 for Jones, while a third scored it 49-46. A number of MMA media and fans, however, thought Reyes should have been awarded the light heavyweight title that night.
That fight ended up being the last of Jones as UFC light heavyweight champion, vacating the title later in 2020 in his attempts to move up to heavyweight. But at the end of 2022, we still await Jones to make his heavyweight debut in the Octagon.
