Dan Hooker defeated Claudio Puelles via TKO (body kick), Round 2 – 4:06 at UFC 281 on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, live from the Madison Square Garden In New York, NY.
“Joe, I’m six foot with a vicious hook. When I bite down on this mouthpiece, oh boy, I make nails look soft. Now, Perth, I’m coming for you. Any man walking the face of this earth can get it. Come and get it,” said Hooker as he ended the interview by kissing the top of Rogan’s head.
Hooker immediately took the mix of the Octagon and mixed a combination of kicks and strikes. Puelles rolled into a takedown and the two fighters traded advantageous positions. Puelles attempted a submission but Hooker was able to move his leg out of the lock. Hooker eventually got on top but decided to stand up. Puelles went for another rolling takedown but Hooker was able to avoid it.
Puelles opened the second round with a takedown attempt, but Hooker was able to defend it. Hooker continued to win the striking exchanges. A left hook from Hooker dropped Puelles, who immediately grabbed a leg. Hooker was able to get away and continued to pick Puelles apart with striking. Puelles, realizing that his only hope was grappling, went for another unsuccessful takedown. Hooker continued to pick Puelles apart with strikes and kicks. Puelles was dropped several times, with Hooker allowing him to get up every time. The fight ended with a front kick from Hooker that landed right under the ribs of Puelles. Referee Keith Peterson stopped the fight with Puelles unable to get back to his feet.
After losing to Arnold Allen in his featherweight return, Hooker moved back to lightweight for UFC 281. Hooker entered New York City in desperate need of a victory. The New Zealand fighter won only one of his previous five fights. Hooker’s last victory was at UFC 266 when he defeated Nasrat Haqparast.
Puelles entered UFC 281 on a five-fight winning streak. In his last fight, Puelles earned a performance of the night bonus for submitting Clay Guida.
