Ben Shalom wants to acquire the services of unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. The BOXXER chief has plans to boost the Ukrainian’s star power by making him the home fighter on British shores.
Usyk has established himself in the UK market with big wins over Anthony Joshua, Tony Bellew, and Derek Chisora on English soil. But Shalom believes Usyk would benefit from working with his promotional outfit in order to fulfil his full potential.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We think his fights should be in the UK. We’d love to work with Oleksandr and that’s something that we are speaking about. He wants to fight in the UK, he knows that the UK is probably a very strong market.
“We’ve seen him over here so many times, we’d love to have him over in the UK, really build his message and build his following and have him on the home side. Because he’s always come over here, whether it was [against Tony] Bellew or [Derek] Chisora and he’s always been the away fighter.
Usyk is set to face another Brit next in WBC champion Tyson Fury. The pair were targeting a February date for their undisputed fight.
However, the IBF has ordered the Ukrainian to defend his world title against mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic which threatens to delay the fight. Usyk could vacate his title and prioritise a clash with The Gyspy King but risks his ultimate goal of becoming the first two-weight undisputed champion of the four-belt era in the process.
