Arguably one of the least flattering pieces in most women’s wardrobe, puffer jackets are a serious sartorial anomaly.
More closely linked to the marshmallow family than most things we’d confidently wear out in public, their eponymous puffy nature renders them shamelessly bulky in terms of silhouette, which is one of the many reasons we’re all so obsessed with them.
After all, whose first thought on hearing the morning weather reporter reel off the frankly freezing temperatures dominating the current weather forecast is ‘now how can I flatter my figure AND stay warm?!’.
Even if it was, how much more time can you bear to spend trawling the shops – online or otherwise – for a super chic coat that’s as cosy as a duvet before you inevitably give up and resort to stuffing several layers of knitwear beneath your trench? How much easier would it be to just forgo the ‘flattery’ and plump for a puffer?
Luckily, the puffer jacket is having a real moment right now. Sure, they’ve been on our radar for a while now, but with the likes of Balenciaga, Vetements, Acne and Stella McCartney proving the puffer’s high fashion prowess they’ve become less of a merely practical purchase and more of a sartorially savvy investment.
If you’re after a classic, cropped number, look no further than the fashion set’s favourite online clothing store, ASOS, whose impressive roster of brands on-site offer up a smorgasbord of options including a polka-dot number and a gingham checked take to cater to the season’s favourite prints.
ASOS also has a great pastel blue sleeveless incarnation by Monki, while Versace’s classic colour-block puffer will undoubtedly stand the test of time.
For something a little longer, the likes of & Other Stories, H&M and Moncler have some seriously epic mid-length puffer coats which truly feel like a wrap-around duvet.
