We are not prone to hyperbole, but it was literally freezing this morning. Thirty-two degrees, no joke. The 10-day forecast is looking equally frosty, with weekend rain and consecutive mornings in the 30s. It is time to tuck into a bowl of steaming, savory galbitang.
The Korean beef short rib soup is one of six on the menu at Tang Tang Tang, a new Korean eatery in Concord that specializes in guk, or Korean soups. (Tang is the Sino-Korean word that means boiling water or soup). The restaurant is currently in its soft opening at 1679 Willow Pass Road, with hours from 11 a.m. daily, and the timing for our chilly bones couldn’t be better. Check out the menu at www.tangtangtangca.com.
While the city has no shortage of Korean barbecue joints, this is its first dedicated soup house. Tang Tang Tang soups are large, slow-simmered and range in price from $18 to $26. There’s Beef Brisket Seolleongtang made with beef bone broth, slices of tender beef brisket, glass noodles and egg ($18), and an oxtail soup with green onion, dried jujube, noodles and egg ($26). They also make a special chicken soup that features a small whole chicken stuffed with noodles, potato and rice cake ($24).
Don’t miss the non-soup options at this promising new eatery, including the soondubu-jjigae, fiery dishes of freshly-curdled soft tofu, veggies, meat or seafood and gochujang with stone pot rice. There’s a small menu of appetizers plus grilled barbecue meats and cold noodles.
We’re thinking post cold-snap for the latter.
