Being one of the most popular shows, Imlie currently features Megha Chakraborty as Choti Imlie and Karan Vohra as her husband Atharva Rana (DJ Arto) along with Seerat Kapoor as Chini Tripathi, the antagonist. This may be the new lead cast of Imlie but a couple of months ago, the show had a completely different cast with Sumbul Touqeer as original Imlie, Fahmaan as Aryan, and Mayuri Deshmukh as Malini. However, the storyline of the show saw them dying in a bomb blast, as they bid adieu to the show. But when a show is as popular as Imlie, the lead characters tend to create a special place in the audience’s heart. So to take a risk of undergoing a 360 degree change would have been quite challenging for director Ashish Shrivastav. He opens up about the experience in this exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.
EXCLUSIVE: Ashish Shrivastav opens up on the challenges of changing the entire lead cast of Imlie; says, “When Megha became Imlie, we were worried”
Talking about how difficult it was for them as makers to take such a massive risk in Imlie, Ashish Shrivastav told Bollywood Hungama, “It is true that there is always pressure when I you create the season 2 of a hit show, especially when the show is on the top and actors and the team have left an impact. To build a show with a completely new set of team was not an easy task. It was quite challenging, especially considering that we didn’t have much of the scenes or shots in the bank and had very limited time. In three days, we had shot the first episode and we continued shooting from thereon. So we never got the luxury of time to build the character or mount the show. Still, because of the hard work of my team and the way producer Gul Khan has maintained the legacy of the show, we are glad we could maintain the expectations and today Imlie continues to be amongst the top five highest TRP-rated shows.”
Replacing the leading lady was equally risky. Agreeing to it, Ashish also revealed that they were quite concerned when Megha came on board. “Honestly, when Megha replaced Sumbul as Junior Imlie, we were equally worried if she will be able to live up to the character. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Sumbul had indeed left a mark as the lead of the show and audiences had a soft spot for her and Fahmaan. We did do a lot of hard-work. Like in case of Megha as Imlie, she is not a rural-girl. She has lived in a village but she is brought up in a city unlike the original Imlie. So it has taken time for us to enhance and polish this character of Imlie. And there are times, when Megha herself has felt the pressure of keeping up with the show and the name it has made for itself. Yet somehow, she is doing a great job. I have to say that Megha is quite sincere, hard-working and also a very fun-loving girl. I am very thankful that both the actors, Megha and Karan (Vohra) have stood by us during all our tough times.”
He further added how despite having an urban bringing the new Imlie too struggles with English as a language. “You are right. We started off the character as someone who is weak in English. We wouldn’t say that she doesn’t understand at all. In real life, initially it was a little ‘over the top’ when she couldn’t talk much in English especially since she lived in the city but as per audience’s feedback, we did correct it a little and tried to create it as a character today’s people can resonate with. As of now, the show doesn’t feature this part of her as much as before because we have tried to tone it down as much as possible when it comes to day-to-day life interactions,” he concluded.
For the unversed, Imlie currently revolves around how Chini will go to any lengths to marry the rich Atharva Rana, whereas an unaware Atharva is caught between his lies of betraying the good-natured Imlie and wanting to marry the love of his life, Chini. The show airs on Star Plus and is also available on Disney+Hotstar.
