Joshua’s ex-trainer warns Brit about ‘jumping’ between coaches in dig

Anthony Joshua’s former trainer Robert Garcia has warned AJ about the potential teething problems of ‘jumping’ between trainers. Garcia would ‘love’ to continue working with Joshua, but it appears that is unlikely with the Watford powerhouse currently touring America in search of a new coach.

The pair linked up ahead of Joshua’s rematch against Oleksandr Usyk in August. Under Garcia, AJ showed marked improvements from his inaugural encounter with the Ukrainian but after just four months of working together, Joshua has decided to explore his options.

The two-time heavyweight champion has visited legendary trainers Derrick James and Virgil Hunter in recent weeks and is expected to make his final decision on his new training time in the new year. But Garcia would like to see Joshua stay put.

“I would love to [continue training Joshua]. When a fighter is jumping from one trainer to another from one fight to the other, it’s just not going to be good,” he told Seconds Out.

“There are great trainers, you know Derrick James is a great trainer. It’s not like it’s going to be a bad choice, but they are going to start off from zero, so it might be a little bit difficult.”

Joshua is expected to return to the ring in either March or April of next year at the O2 Arena, London. His next opponent is yet to be officially disclosed although it is understood that Dillian Whyte is at the front of the queue.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has also mentioned Zhang Zhilei, Filip Hrgovic, Otto Wallin and Demsey McKean in the same conversation with Chris Arreola and Gerald Washington claiming that inquiries have been made into their services as well.
