The 64-year-old actor, who was caught by new red travel list restrictions when travelling back from South Africa, where he was visiting his elderly mother, had previously taken to social media to reveal the ‘grim’ conditions of his supposedly four-star quarantine hotel.
On Sunday night though, his mood was a little lighter as he shared a quick video clip of himself performing one of out-of-work actor Withnail’s most celebrated lines.
Whispering to the camera, Richard quoted: ‘Alright, this is the plan. We get in there and get wrecked, then we eat a pork pie, then we drop a couple of Surmontil-50s each.
‘That means we’ll miss out Monday but come up smiling on Tuesday morning.’
Raising his eyebrows at the end of the video, the Everybody Loves Jamie star shared his impromptu performance with the caption: ‘Channelling Bruce Robinson’s Withnail to guide me through ten days in quarantine.’
Richard’s followers enjoyed the actor’s clip, with some responding in the same vein and sharing other lines from the film.
‘“We have come on holiday by mistake.” One of my favourite lines in a film. Ever’, wrote one, while another commented: ‘I remember your series about extravagant hotels, I think you should do a [sic] episode in your room.’
Withnail and I follows two ‘resting’ actors, anxious Marwood (Paul McGann) and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail (Grant), who spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub.
When they take a holiday “by mistake’” at the country house of Withnail’s flamboyant uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain.
Richard, whose wife Joan Washington died in September following a short battle with lung cancer, previously revealed he was holed up at a Gatwick airport hotel and has had to fork out £228 a day for costs including food that he feels leaves a lot to be desired.
South Africa is among the countries on the red travel list due to the emergence of a new Covid variant, Omicron.
It means that those returning from a red list country must isolate at a Government-approved hotel at a cost to themselves.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, he wrote: ‘In quarantine at Gatwick 4* Holiday Inn (under reconstruction) charged £228 per day.
‘These 3 meals amount to approx £20. Non quarantine Holiday Inn nearby costs £89 incl breakfast. How does Gov justify this cost to a traveller for “hospitality”. You do the maths as am confounded!’
He included a photo of his meals for the day, which included a tuna and cucumber sandwich, chips and a small carton of orange juice.
In a later post he detailed his issues with cancelled flights and how ‘dire’ the food was, adding: ‘Feels like punishment!’
