Noah Schnapp has come out as gay in a characteristically authentic, cute TikTok video, confirming his similarity to his Stranger Things character Will Byers.

And the best thing about it? The entire vibe around his coming out is this: “it’s not a big deal”.

In Schnapp’s TikTok video he wrote: “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know’”.

To describe his family’s reaction to the revelation, the actor lip syncs along to a piece of audio that says: “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, will never be that serious.”

We’re absolutely overjoyed at this attitude to Noah Schnapp’s coming out, and the fact that he has acknowledged his “similar” journey to his Stranger Things character Will’s journey.

He captioned his TikTok video: “I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought.”

Since the show’s first season, there has been much speculation around Will’s sexuality, culminating into much more direct suggestions of his love for his best friend Mike Wheeler in the most recent season.

In an interview with Variety last summer Schnapp opened up about Will’s sexuality, and the importance of it being a slow build when it comes to the show’s wider plotlines.

“It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends?” he said. “Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike. But before, it was a slow arc.

“I think it is done so beautifully, because it’s so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay.”

He also talked about Will’s journey in the latest season, and the difficulties he faces.

“I think for Season 4, it was just me playing this character who loves his best friend but struggles with knowing if he’ll be accepted or not, and feeling like a mistake and like he doesn’t belong. Will has always felt like that.”
