ZIMBABWE international Tino Kadewere has set his sights on playing an important role for Olympique Lyon this season after recently regaining his full fitness after a difficult start to the campaign due to injury problems.

The 25-year-old versatile forward has been out of action since last month due to a quadriceps injury picked up during national team duty with the Warriors against South Africa in the opening round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Kadewere had also missed most of his team’s preseason preparations as he recovered from surgery.

After missing the Warriors’ back-to-back defeats against Ghana in the FIFA World Cup, the former Harare City player took the opportunity to work on his fitness.

Now that he is back, Kadewere has set his sights on regaining his place in the Lyon starting lineup and helping the French topflight club to secure a Uefa Champions League slot for next season.

He could make his return from injury in Olympique Lyon’s French Ligue 1 clash against AS Monaco Saturday.

“I took advantage of the international break to recover. I stayed in Lyon to prepare for the next match. I’m very happy, I had a pretty challenging season last year. Especially after my operation. I am motivated, I feel better, I am ready to help the team.

“I’m happy to be back. I’m very motivated and I feel very good. We have a big run of games. We will try to take as many points as possible”, Tino Kadewere said during a press conference on Thursday.

“We worked a lot in front of goal and on the quality of our crosses. We need to be efficient. I have confidence in myself and I want to help the team.

“I want to play as many minutes as possible — I’m ready for that. I want to reach the Champions League with OL”, he added.

Kadewere enjoyed a successful debut season in France’s topflight league despite having to deal with the tragic loss of his brother Prince just before the start of the season.

He scored 10 goals in 33 appearances and provided three assists as Olympic Lyon finished fourth behind French Ligue 1 champions Lille, PSG, and Monaco.

The Zimbabwean was Lyon’s third-highest scorer behind new Barcelona signing Memphis Depay (20) and Karl Toko Ekambi (14) despite missing most matches at the start of the season and also being deployed in a right-wing role,

Kadewere is expected to play another important role for Lyon, who will have to strike a balance between their participation in French’s domestic competitions and the Europa League.
