Beyond boycott calls on social media, there seem to be several factors at play because of which viewers are spending less on Bollywood/Hindi films. Interestingly, South films, including their Hindi-dubbed versions, have done exceptionally well in the last few years well while Bollywood movies have struggled to find viewers.
EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh compares South cinema with Bollywood; says, “Unfortunately, Hindi film industry has lost its track”
In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, when asked whether South content has become better compared to Hindi film content, Film critic, Taran Adarsh said, “South had never changed its tracks. They have always made larger than life films. If you would look at their Telugu films; be it from Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Nandamuri Balakrishna to Allu Arjun, Junior NTR, Mahesh Babu; each of their film’s essence has been entertainment. They have always given larger than life entertainment in their films”.
“Unfortunately, we (Hindi film industry) have lost our track. The kind of films we used to make in 70s, 80s and 90s used to be larger than life, multi starrer entertainer films. I would agree a lot of films did not work even in that era, but people used to still look forward to watching those kinds of films. In current times, the filmmakers provide good cast but fail to deliver the right content, which is why rejection of those films seem valid”, Taran added, while comparing Bollywood scenario then and now.
Expensive ticket price, high entertainment tax, OTT platforms, poor content are many reasons why a shift from Hindi film industry to South cinema was noticed.
