Germany’s Chancellor has been severely criticised for refusing to send its Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
Olaf Scholz was told that Germany “had failed” in the eyes of the world and that Putin would be laughing at Berlin’s dithering.
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the chairwoman of the Defence Committee in the Bundestag, said: “At the very least, it would have been the right thing to give our partners the green light.”
Ms Strack-Zimmermann is a member of the pro-business FDP, which is part of Scholz’s coalition government.
Around 15 European countries are seeking to deliver German-made Leopard tanks to Kyiv, to help the Ukrainians drive the Russians from their territory.
However, they are unable to do so without the consent of the German government.
At a security meeting held at a US base in Ramstein on Friday, Germany’s new Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, would only commit to a review of Berlin’s tank stocks.
