Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick details way Mason Greenwood must improve after Young Boys goal

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick says Mason Greenwood needs to become more of an athlete if he is to nail down a regular starting place for the Red Devils. Greenwood opened the scoring at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as United were held to a 1-1 draw by Young Boys in the Champions League.

Greenwood was in scintillating form against the Swiss side as he ran their defence ragged.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring courtesy of a beautifully-taken bicycle kick which found its way into the bottom corner inside the opening 10 minutes.

And he could have had an assist to his name after teeing-up Juan Mata just after the half-hour mark. But the Spaniard fluffed his lines and shot straight at keeper Guillaume Faivre.

“I think today he also showed not only the quality because of that beautiful goal, but also the way that he set-up the opportunity for Juan Mata was brilliant,” Rangnick said when quizzed about Greenwood after the match.

“He’s a massive talent – left foot, right foot, good on the ball. Also the way that he set-up the goal for Fred on Sunday – so it’s about continuity.

“I am not so much worried about his technical level,” continued the German.

“We need to develop him physically and mentally to become the strongest version of himself.

“And if we manage to do that, he can become a regular player and a valuable player for our club in the future.”

The Red Devils cemented top spot in Group F following their draw on Wednesday night after Rangnick made 11 changes to his starting line-up.

Veteran keeper Tom Heaton came on in the second half to make his United debut, while Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage – son of Robbie – also turned out for the Red Devils for the first time.

“It was a bit erratic in the second half, but I still believe it was the right decision to give some of those young players the opportunity to play,” added Rangnick.
