Paul Ince believes Mason Mount could benefit from seeking a ‘new challenge’ away from Chelsea after the Blues’ heavy spending continued in January.

Mount has made nearly 200 appearances for Chelsea since breaking into the first-team in 2019, helping the Blues win the Champions League two years ago.

The 24-year-old has been a mainstay in Chelsea’s side over the past four seasons but is enduring one of his more underwhelming campaigns, scoring three goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Ince believes Mount has gone ‘stale’ at Stamford Bridge and has suggested he should leave Chelsea.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly continued his spending spree during the January transfer window, splashing out almost £300m on the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Ince anticipates a ‘rejig’ at Chelsea following the arrivals and says Mount could look to move on and search for a ‘new challenge’ away from west London.

‘It’s a funny one really because two years ago Mason Mount was bang in form, everyone was raving about him and he was a cert to start for England,’ Ince told BoyleSports.

‘Since the change of manager, he’s lost his way and Chelsea are trying to sign anyone they can at the moment so there’s going to be a rejig at Stamford Bridge.

‘Sometimes it’s good to have a new challenge because sometimes you can go stale if you stay at one club for too long. Mount is at an age where he needs to be playing every week. He’s a very talented player.’

Following another busy transfer window, Chelsea boss Graham Potter believes his team are ‘ready to attack’ in the second half of the season.

The Blues have struggled under the former Brighton manager and sit just 10th in the Premier League ahead of Friday’s clash with Fulham.

‘It’s not the amount you spend on its own that gets success, it’s more than that,’ Potter said.

‘We have got a lot of really good players and we have to create an environment where they push each other, provide healthy competition and are ready to play.

‘There will be some awkward conversations but that’s the reality of where we are. Only 11 can play, only a certain amount can be in squads so we just need to be honest, transparent and respectful.

‘We’ve learned a lot this season, gained a lot of strength and are ready to attack the second half of the season with positivity.’
