Newspapers will still be printed despite industrial action

The West Australian, The Sunday Times, Regional and PerthNow newspapers will continue to be published without disruption despite industrial action by members of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, Seven West Media has said.

The company said it took the unfortunate but necessary decision to lock striking workers out indefinitely following a walk out on Thursday in an effort to bring the union to the negotiating table and to avoid significant ongoing workplace disruption.

Since the expiry of the previous Enterprise Agreement almost two years ago West Australian Newspapers Ltd, a subsidiary of Seven West Media Ltd and the union have been engaged in a bargaining process.

But AMWU (WA) secretary Steve McCartney said the profit-making business was not treating workers at the print centre fairly.

“This company is making millions in profits, but they’re trying to strip the wages and conditions of the workers out of the agreement and refusing to discuss it with them.”

Seven West Media says it remains committed to negotiations to provide sustainable employment conditions – and hopes to resolve a deal.

In 2019 the business successfully renegotiated its Editorial Enterprise Agreement, which covers journalists working on its metropolitan newspapers. Last year the Community Newspaper Group Enterprise Agreement was also ratified.
