Every airline offers something different—but aside from comfort, catering and service, safety has to be one of the most most important criteria for judging whether one is better than another.
AirlineRatings.com have just announced the top 20 airlines for safety in 2023 after taking into consideration the following factors for all 385 airlines that it monitors:
- the number of crashes over the past five years.
- the number of serious incidents over the past two years.
- the audits from aviation’s governing bodies and lead associations.
- the age of the airline’s fleet.
- expert analysis of pilot training.
- Covid protocols.
It found that Australian airline Qantas came out top, because as Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said, since the 100 years that the airline has been in continuous operation, it has amassed an amazing record of safety and operations firsts.
As one of the world’s oldest airlines, Thomas added that many believe it to be one of the world’s most experienced airlines. Qantas continuously adds new aircraft to its fleet so that planes can also fly continuously for the longest time.

Many of these airlines are common to ‘best of’ airline categories—Qatar Airways came out ahead of all others in the best airline of 2022.
